## Synopsis

Natural Law (Causa Própria, 2022) is a Portuguese crime drama miniseries created by Edgar Medina and Rui Cardoso Martins for RTP1, running seven episodes of roughly 44 minutes. Ana Martins (Margarida Vila-Nova), a judge in a small provincial town, is pulled into the investigation after the murder of a local student. Her role places her close to the inquiry, with Inspector Mário (Nuno Lopes) and Inspectora Maria (Catarina Wallenstein) working the case, while Judge Luciano (António Fonseca) and Attorney Renato (Gonçalo Waddington) press their own claims within the courthouse. The engine of the show is the squeeze between professional duty and private loyalty: each decision Ana makes in the case threatens to expose her family, including her husband Vítor (Ivo Canelas) and her circle around Alice (Maria Rueff). Episodes unfold through interviews, courtroom maneuvering and quiet domestic scenes where suspicion spreads through a close community. Told as one continuous story across a single limited season, the series builds a restrained, claustrophobic tension rather than spectacle. Its tone is somber, intimate and morally weighted, with a slow-burning dread. Fans of Broadchurch, The Killing and Liar will find resonance in its procedural suspense and its focus on a justice figure whose integrity is tested.
