## Synopsis

Exception (2022) is a Japanese animated science fiction series created by Otsuichi for Netflix. Set in a distant future where humanity has been forced to abandon Earth, the story follows a spacecraft carrying a crew of 3D-printed specialists dispatched to terraform a new planet. The engine of the series is a slowly unfolding question about the nature of the crew itself: what they are, where they came from, and what separates them from the humans who sent them. Each episode peels back another layer of the mission, mixing quiet shipboard routines with eerie, supernatural-tinged reveals that unsettle the crew's sense of purpose. The show runs as a single eight-episode season, a compact limited anime with a continuous arc where order matters. Its tone is cerebral and melancholic, with a disquieting atmosphere of isolation and dread that rewards patient attention. Fans of Planetes, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Dark Matter will find resonance in its meditation on identity, mortality and the cost of survival among the stars.
