## What critics say

Critics found Queens buoyed by its veteran leads' charisma and chemistry, but felt its soapy writing and uneven tone never fully delivered on the comeback story.

## Synopsis

Queens is a United States soap-tinged music drama that aired on ABC from 2021 to 2022 and was canceled after a single season. Brandy Norwood plays Naomi, one of four estranged women in their forties who reunite as the Nasty Bitches, the hip-hop group that made them legends in the 1990s. Eve, Naturi Naughton, and Nadine Velazquez play the other former bandmates. Each woman wants her old swagger and fame back, but personal grudges, family obligations, and a music business that has moved on keep getting in the way. Episodes move between the present-day scramble for a comeback and flashbacks to the group's rise, giving the series a nostalgic, bittersweet edge alongside its brash, confident humor. Stylistically it is a glossy, soapy ensemble with plenty of rap-battle energy and interpersonal drama. Fans of Empire and Pitch Perfect will find resonance in its mix of female friendship, musical ambition, and faded-glory melodrama.
