## Synopsis

Love Spells (Amarres, 2021) is a Mexican supernatural comedy series created by Fernanda Eguiarte and released on HBO Max. Gabriela de la Garza plays Ana, a woman whose mounting financial troubles push her to tap into the magical ancestry of her family, hoping to hold everyone together. Nicole de Albornoz as Olga, Hugo Catalán as Ricardo, and Alicia Jaziz Zapién as María round out the principal circle, and each episode of this single-season run of ten roughly forty-five minute episodes follows a spell that promises an easy fix and instead tangles the love affairs of those around her. The engine is simple and funny: every charm aimed at someone else's heart produces a fresh domestic complication, and the family's money problems never quite go away. The tone is breezy, irreverent and warmly chaotic, with a quirky, grounded Mexico City feel and a light touch of sexual frankness typical of adult streaming comedy. Fans of Jane the Virgin, Like Water for Chocolate and Charmed will find resonance in its blend of family melodrama, romance and witchy mischief.
