## What critics say

Audiences found the canceled 1984 ABC helicopter action series a weak follow-up to the 1983 film, with its ratings collapsing before the story could develop.

## Synopsis

Blue Thunder (1984) is a US network action crime series created by Guy Magar for ABC, adapted from the 1983 film of the same title. James Farentino plays Frank Chaney, a veteran pilot assigned to a sleek police helicopter, with Dana Carvey as Clinton Wonderlove and Dick Butkus and Bubba Smith as fellow officers around him. The engine of the show is the aircraft itself: a converted helicopter that swoops over city streets, tracks suspects from the sky, and gets backup from a ground support van hiding a desert camouflage off-road vehicle. Each episode unfolds as a self-contained case that mixes aerial pursuit with ordinary police work, giving the series a brash, spectacle-driven rhythm. The mood is breezy and muscular, with a slick 1980s surface and an emphasis on machinery, stunts, and teamwork. Eleven episodes were produced in its single season before ABC pulled it from the schedule, leaving the story unfinished. Fans of Airwolf and Knight Rider will find resonance in its high-tech vehicle action and its nostalgic eighties energy.
