## Synopsis

The Empress (2022-2024) is a German-language historical romance series created by Katharina Eyssen for Netflix. Devrim Lingnau plays Empress Elisabeth, known as Sisi, a rebellious young woman who falls for Emperor Franz Joseph, played by Philip Froissant, and becomes his unlikely bride. Her struggle to find her footing in the Viennese court drives the story, as she clashes with his watchful mother and the court's rigid expectations while navigating rival factions and political maneuvering. Melika Foroutan appears as Princess Sophie of Bavaria, adding a sharp counterweight to the palace world. The series unfolds as a serialized period piece across two seasons and eighteen hour-long episodes, built around the tension of a young woman learning to survive an imperial household. Its tone blends courtly intrigue with romance, lush costume drama and a sense of constraint, with a mood that is sometimes playful and sometimes quietly oppressive. Set in nineteenth century Vienna at the height of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, it is an accessible, glamorous entry for viewers who enjoy royal dramas. Fans of The Crown and Victoria will find resonance in its portrait of a young monarch negotiating power, duty and affection behind palace walls.
