## Synopsis

Tenacious D (1997-2000) is an American comedy series created by Kyle Gass, Bob Odenkirk, Jack Black, and David Cross for HBO. Jack Black and Kyle Gass play themselves as the two halves of the duo that calls itself the greatest band on earth, with Paul F. Tompkins appearing in several episodes. The engine is the gap between their grand self-image and the petty obstacles they meet, with each half hour built from sketches, songs, and escapades that treat rock swagger as a joke. The overview points to heavy power chords, lyrics about sex and Satan, and bold self-promotion, so the comedy runs crude and loud. Its single six-episode season gives it a compact, self-contained shape, and its HBO origins place it alongside other irreverent early cable comedies. Set in a loosely rendered rock world of late nineties America, it has a cheerfully juvenile, anarchic energy. Fans of This Is Spinal Tap, Flight of the Conchords, and Mr. Show with Bob and David will find resonance in its mix of musical parody, cringe comedy, and deadpan self-regard.
