## What critics say

Widely regarded as a landmark of British television drama, praised for its political anger, humane writing and grounded portrayal of working-class unemployment under Thatcherism.

## Synopsis

Boys from the Blackstuff follows Yosser Hughes, a Liverpool scaffolder thrown onto the dole when Thatcher-era recession guts the building trade and his city's industries. Across its short run, the British drama tracks Yosser and his unemployed mates as they drift between dole queues, pubs, and cramped family kitchens, trying to keep their dignity while the world offers them little work and less respect. The tone is bleak and unsentimental, with flashes of gallows humour and a sharp ear for working-class speech. Its documentary-style realism, handheld camerawork, and raw performances make the material feel lived-in rather than staged. Its emotional power comes from small moments of solidarity and humiliation rather than plot twists. Viewers drawn to social realism, character studies of masculinity and pride, and stories of communities bent by economic collapse will find its portrait of hardship intimate and quietly devastating. It is a difficult, humane watch that asks what becomes of men when the work that defined them disappears, and it remains a landmark of 1980s British television drama.
