## Synopsis

Hitler: A Film from Germany (1977) is a German-French-British art-house history miniseries created by Hans-Jürgen Syberberg for ZDF and Rai 3. Rather than following a conventional plot, this four-part work is a structure-free examination of the rise and fall of the Third Reich, with each part of its runtime exploring a different angle. The engine is an essayistic probing of how Hitler's cult of personality was manufactured through propaganda, how that propaganda borrowed from older German cultural, spiritual and national heritage, and how the Holocaust and its ideology were driven forward, examined particularly from Heinrich Himmler's point of view. Heinz Schubert plays both Hitler and Himmler, while Hellmut Lange takes on Joseph Goebbels, and Syberberg himself narrates. The episodes are built from staged tableaux, theatrical sets and voiced commentary rather than documentary footage, giving the material a dreamlike and unsettling register. Its tone is austere, analytical and haunting, with a dread that builds from the rhetoric of spectacle toward genocide. Viewers who appreciate Night and Fog, The Sorrow and the Pity and other essayistic reckonings with Nazi Germany will find resonance here. Only four episodes of about 110 minutes each make up the run, so it demands full attention throughout.
