## Synopsis

The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes (1994) is a British television miniseries created by John Hawkesworth for ITV1, produced by Granada Television. Jeremy Brett plays the consulting detective Sherlock Holmes, with Edward Hardwicke as his loyal companion Dr Watson and Rosalie Williams as Mrs Hudson. Each of its six episodes adapts a separate short story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, including The Three Gables, The Dying Detective, The Golden Pince-Nez, The Red Circle, The Mazarin Stone and The Cardboard Box. The engine of every episode is a puzzle presented to Holmes, whether a stolen artifact, a threatening letter or a grim parcel, and his task is to read small clues and reach a conclusion before the trail goes cold. The format is a self-contained case-of-the-week, so each story stands alone while sharing the same detective and companion. The series is set in late nineteenth century London, with foggy streets, gaslit interiors and the rigid manners of Victorian society. Its tone is measured and atmospheric, favoring deductive conversation and quiet unease over spectacle. Fans of Sherlock, Poirot and Murdoch Mysteries will find resonance in its blend of period detail, literary pedigree and intellectual puzzle solving.
