## Synopsis

Mirza Ghalib (1988) is an Indian national-television period drama series created for Doordarshan. Naseeruddin Shah stars as Mirza Ghalib, the most admired poet in Urdu and Persian writing, with Tanvi Azmi as his wife Umrao Begum and Neena Gupta as the courtesan Nawaab Jaan. Shafi Inamdar appears as the rival poet Ustad Zauq, while Sudhir Dalvi plays the emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar. The engine of the series is a poet's struggle to win recognition and steady patronage while his verse, wit, and pride repeatedly collide with the expectations of nobles, rivals, and the court. Each of its eighteen episodes is built around courtly exchanges, couplets recited in salons, and the money and favour that keep an artist afloat. The single season runs eighteen episodes of roughly twenty-seven minutes, a measured, character-driven biography rather than a plot-heavy drama. Set in nineteenth-century Delhi, the show evokes the decaying grandeur of the Mughal court, its gardens, havelis, and musical evenings. The tone is contemplative and elegiac, lyrical with a dry, affectionate humour. Fans of Umrao Jaan, Jodhaa Akbar and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag will find resonance in its literary, historical atmosphere.
