## Synopsis

Uprising (2001) is an American two-part miniseries created for NBC and produced by Brooklyn Films, a historical war drama built around the Warsaw Ghetto of World War II. Donald Sutherland plays Adam Czerniaków, the head of the Judenrat, the council appointed to administer the ghetto under German authority, and his struggle to obey occupying orders while protecting the Jewish community forms the moral spine of the story. Around him, Jon Voight plays SS-Brigadeführer Jürgen Stroop, the German commander whose policies tighten the noose, while Hank Azaria plays Mordechaj Anielewicz and David Schwimmer plays Icchak Cukierman, young resistance leaders weighing armed defiance against survival. Leelee Sobieski plays Tosia Altmann, and Radha Mitchell and Mili Avital appear among the ghetto's other principal figures. The engine of the drama is the impossible arithmetic of occupation: every regulation, every list and every transport is a choice between lives. Told across two episodes of roughly ninety minutes each, the story unfolds in a single ghetto in occupied Poland, its streets, councils and cramped apartments rendered in sober, claustrophobic detail. The tone is grave, restrained and mournful, a reckoning with collaboration and resistance. Viewers who appreciate Schindler's List, Band of Brothers and Conspiracy will find the same weight of historical witness and moral ambiguity here.
