## Synopsis

War of the Kingdoms (2025) is a German national-television limited series created by Wolfgang Hohlbein and produced by Constantin Film for RTL+. Adapted from the Nibelungen legend and set in a besieged medieval Burgundy, it follows the arrival of the heroic warrior Siegfried (Jannis Niewöhner), whose presence rekindles hope among a people hemmed in by enemies. At the center of the court is King Gunther (Dominic Marcus Singer), who is hatching a dangerous plan, and his master-at-arms Hagen (Gijs Naber), a formidable fighter who is secretly in love with the king's daughter Kriemhild (Lilja van der Zwaag). Across six episodes of roughly forty-seven minutes each, the story builds through council-chamber scheming, shifting alliances, and sword-driven confrontations, with each installment tightening the pressure on the kingdom. The tone is somber and heroic, mixing mythic grandeur with the quiet poison of divided loyalties and private longing. Its brooding atmosphere and grounded medieval texture will appeal to viewers who loved the political maneuvering of The Last Kingdom and the legend-rooted drama of Vikings, as well as fans of Game of Thrones seeking a tighter, self-contained saga of betrayal and honor.
