## Synopsis

The Informant (2022) is a Hungarian national-television political drama series created by Bálint Szentgyörgyi and released on HBO Max. Set behind the Iron Curtain in communist Budapest, it follows college freshman Geri (Gergely Váradi), who arrives at university hoping for parties and romance but is secretly an informant for State Security. To save his brother, he must spy on a circle of radicals led by the charismatic Száva (Márton Patkós). Alongside them are Kiss Imre (Szabolcs Thuróczy), Halász Barnabás (Benjámin Lengyel) and Szabó Kata (Júlia Szász), whose loyalties and secrets tighten around him. The engine of the series is the constant risk of exposure: every meeting, friendship and party becomes a report he must write. Its single season of eight episodes builds a tense, claustrophobic web of suspicion, moral compromise and youthful idealism. The mood is melancholic and paranoid, with a dread-filled atmosphere of watchful streets and whispered conversations. Fans of The Lives of Others and The Americans will find resonance in its portrait of a double life under an oppressive state.
