## Synopsis

Cromartie High School (2003-2004) is a Japanese animated comedy series created by Eiji Nonaka for TV Tokyo, a 26-episode single season of roughly twelve-minute episodes. Takashi Kamiyama, voiced by Takahiro Sakurai, enrolls at Cromartie High, a school where nearly every student is a delinquent, and he is apparently the only one who is not. By the twisted logic that a truly tough rabbit can lie down with lions, he decides he must be the toughest in his class, and that premise drives the show's episodes. Principal characters include the rival Beta Mechazawa, voiced by Mika Kanai, and Shinichi Mechazawa, voiced by Norio Wakamoto, whose rivalries and misadventures fill each short installment. The series is built from brisk gags that lampoon the conventions of tough-guy shounen manga, with exaggerated brawls, posturing and absurd escalation. Its tone is deadpan, irreverent and anarchic, with a cameo by Freddie Mercury adding to the strangeness. Fans of Gintama and Great Teacher Onizuka will find resonance in its affectionate mockery of Japanese high school delinquent anime. Its production was handled by Production I.G.
