## Synopsis

Kindred (2022) is an American limited series created by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins for Hulu, adapted from Octavia Butler's novel. Aspiring writer Dana James (Mallori Johnson) is repeatedly yanked from her modern life back to a 19th century Maryland plantation, where she finds herself bound to the household of Thomas Weylin (Ryan Kwanten) and his wife Margaret (Gayle Rankin). Her husband Kevin Franklin (Micah Stock) is caught in the time slips with her, and the engine of the story is Dana's struggle to survive a world of brutal domination while trying to understand why she keeps being summoned back. Each episode weighs immediate danger against the slow revelation of family ties that bind across generations. The eight-episode single season moves through intimate, claustrophobic rooms of the plantation and the cramped present, creating a tense, harrowing and emotionally fraught atmosphere. Tone and theme sit close to the surface: the drama is sober, unflinching and reflective about history, power and survival. Fans of Outlander, The Underground Railroad and Lovecraft Country will find resonance in its blend of time travel and unflinching reckoning with American slavery, presented as a Hulu prestige drama.
