## Synopsis

Spartakus and the Sun Beneath the Sea (1985-1987) is a French animated fantasy adventure series created by Nina Wolmark and broadcast on Antenne 2. Its story follows the messenger Arkana, who is sent up from the Arkadians, a people who have retreated to the earth's core under their artificial sun, the Tehra. When that sun begins to fail, Arkana joins two ordinary surface kids, Matt and Rebecca, along with the anteaters Bic and Bac and the mysterious warrior Spartakus, to search the layered worlds of the strata for a way to save both a people and possibly the world. The series runs across two seasons and ninety-two episodes of about twenty-five minutes each, built as an episodic quest in which each stop on the journey brings new landscapes, creatures and obstacles. Voiced characters such as the narrator and the scheming Massmedia add a storybook flavor. Its tone is earnest, adventurous and wondrous, with a hopeful core about courage and friendship across worlds. Fans of Thundercats, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe and Ulysses 31 will find a similar mix of heroic fantasy and 1980s animated television.
