## Synopsis

The Girl Before (2021) is a British psychological thriller limited series created for BBC One, running four episodes of roughly 57 minutes each. Gugu Mbatha-Raw plays Jane Cavendish, a traumatized woman who rents an extraordinary minimalist house, and David Oyelowo plays Edward Monkford, the enigmatic architect who designed it and still seems to hold the place under his spell. Jessica Kate Plummer plays Emma Matthews, whose own story runs alongside Jane's and deepens the mystery. The engine of the show is Jane's uneasy attempt to settle into a home governed by strict rules and exacting standards, while she tries to understand the man who shaped every corner of it. Each episode peels back another layer of the house and its history, with tension building through domestic detail and a steady sense that nothing is quite as it appears. Set in contemporary London, the series carries a cool, austere atmosphere, with an unsettling, rain-soaked tone and a theme of grief making a person vulnerable to control. Fans of Big Little Lies, Gone Girl and Hereditary will find resonance in its slow burn dread and psychological unease.
