## Synopsis

Funny Woman (2023-present) is a British period comedy-drama series created by Nick Hornby, Morwenna Banks and Oliver Parker for Sky Max. Gemma Arterton stars as a young woman from Blackpool who reinvents herself as Sophie Straw, a comic performer determined to find her voice in the male dominated 1960s comedy world of London. Her ambitions collide with the men who control the studios and the stages, and with the family and romantic ties she left behind in the north. Rupert Everett, David Threlfall, Arsher Ali, Tom Bateman and Alexa Davies round out a cast of producers, writers, lovers and relations who each pull her in different directions. Each episode is built around the pressures of getting a sketch, a joke or a television booking past a patriarchal industry, with the sharp, wry rhythms of the era's sitcoms and variety shows setting the pace. The tone is warm and breezy, with a streak of bittersweet realism about the costs of ambition and the limits of a woman's independence. Fans of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Call the Midwife will find resonance in its period detail, gleeful wit and heroine who refuses to stay in her lane. The show runs for two seasons and ten episodes so far, with its story still unfolding.
