## Synopsis

The Fall of the House of Usher (2023) is an American gothic horror miniseries created by Mike Flanagan for Netflix. Bruce Greenwood plays Roderick Usher, a ruthless patriarch whose siblings, including Mary McDonnell as Madeline Usher and Carla Gugino as the enigmatic Verna, have built a pharmaceutical fortune on a foundation of secrets. Henry Thomas and Rahul Kohli fill out the principal family, while Kate Siegel anchors the outsider perspective of Camille L'Espanaye. The engine of the story is a family determined to protect its wealth and future while the heirs begin to die one by one, forcing every member to confront what the dynasty has cost them. Each of the eight hour-long episodes reworks a different tale by Edgar Allan Poe into a sprawling, interlocking mythology, moving between generations through flashbacks and fragmented timelines. The series is a single limited run of eight episodes, a self-contained gothic horror piece rather than a case-of-the-week format. Its tone is melancholic and dread-filled, with a slow, atmospheric build, decaying opulence, and a steady undercurrent of tragedy and grief. Fans of The Haunting of Hill House, Penny Dreadful and Succession will find resonance in its family curse, gothic mansion and corporate decay.
