## Synopsis

Marie Antoinette (2022-2025) is a French-produced historical drama series created by Deborah Davis for Canal+. Emilia Schüle plays the teenage Marie Antoinette, who leaves Austria to marry Louis XVI (Louis Cunningham), the Dauphin of France, and must navigate the rigid rituals of Versailles while bearing the weight of securing the Franco-Austrian alliance. Her central struggle is the gap between the life she wants and the life the court demands, with the pressure to continue the Bourbon line pressing on every private moment. Each episode unfolds through intimate court scenes, etiquette rituals, whispered alliances and rivalries among courtiers, and the marriage itself as a political transaction. The show runs for two seasons and sixteen episodes of roughly fifty-three minutes each, a continuing serialized story rather than a case of the week. Set in late eighteenth century France, the series conveys a claustrophobic, glittering, melancholic atmosphere shaped by misogyny and family power struggles. Its tone is sumptuous yet wistful, with romance and politics intertwined. Viewers who enjoyed The Crown and Reign will find resonance in its royal court intrigue and young woman caught between duty and desire.
