## Synopsis

Rubí (2004) is a Mexican telenovela created by Yolanda Vargas Dulché for Las Estrellas, a Televisa production. Bárbara Mori plays Rubí Pérez, a strikingly beautiful but poor young woman who wins a place at an exclusive university thanks to the sacrifices of her hard-working older sister Cristina (Ana Bertha Espín appears among the principal cast). Her closest friend is Maribel de la Fuente (Jacqueline Bracamontes), a kind and wealthy young woman whose disability Rubí quietly pities even as she envies Maribel's social standing. Rubí's engine is her determination to marry a rich man and leave poverty behind, and every episode turns on the romantic rivalries, class pride, and schemes that follow from that ambition. Sebastián Rulli and Eduardo Santamarina appear among the male leads in the romantic entanglements. Running for one season of 115 episodes, the series unfolds as a single continuing soap narrative with cliffhanging reversals and emotional confrontations. Its tone is melodramatic and heated, with envy, longing and social pretension foregrounded in a stylized Mexican setting. Fans of Betty la fea, Marimar and Los ricos también lloran will find the same mix of class-crossing romance and sudden reversals of fortune.
