## Synopsis

The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe (2022) is a British true crime drama miniseries created by Chris Lang for ITV1. Eddie Marsan plays John Darwin, a northern England prison officer who stages his own death to claim life insurance and escape bankruptcy, while Monica Dolan plays his wife Anne Darwin, who is drawn into the deception. Mark Stanley and Dominic Applewhite play their sons, who are kept in the dark about the scheme. The engine of the four-episode story is the gap between the family's public grief and the private lie, as investigators and insurers begin to notice inconsistencies that could unravel everything. Each episode steadily tightens the screws on the couple's plan, with the tension built from ordinary domestic settings and the mounting cost of keeping a secret. The story is dramatized from a real case and carries a restrained, unsettling tone, with a sense of quiet dread beneath its bureaucratic details. Its atmosphere is grounded and understated rather than sensational. Fans of The Staircase, The Tinder Swindler and other true crime dramatizations of real deception will find resonance in its portrait of a charming fraudster and the people who believe him. Viewers who enjoy intimate, character-driven crime stories built on real events will find it engrossing.
