## Synopsis

Tsunami: The Aftermath (2006) is a British-American historical disaster drama miniseries created for HBO and co-produced with the BBC. Told across two ninety-minute parts, it dramatizes the chaos following the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, filmed on location in Phuket and Khao Lak, Thailand, two of the hardest hit areas. Tim Roth plays Nick Fraser and Toni Collette plays Kathy Graham, while Chiwetel Ejiofor and Sophie Okonedo play Ian and Susie Carter, a couple whose holiday becomes a frantic search for missing family. Hugh Bonneville and Gina McKee add further strands of expatriate grief, and Samrit Machielsen and Will Yun Lee anchor the local Thai perspective. The engine is simple and urgent: people trying to find loved ones, reach hospitals and make sense of ruined landscapes. Storylines move between the foreign visitors and the Thai characters, giving a sense of how the catastrophe reached far beyond the beaches. The register is restrained, grounded and mournful, with an emphasis on endurance and human loss rather than spectacle. Fans of Chernobyl and Band of Brothers, both prestige dramatizations of real catastrophe, will find resonance in its careful, emotionally honest approach to disaster and its aftermath.
