## Synopsis

Ancient Rome: The Rise and Fall of an Empire (2006) is a British drama documentary miniseries created for BBC One. Across six hour-long episodes, it revisits turning points in Roman history through staged reenactments paired with a narrator's voice-over, following the rise of the republic and the intrigues of its leading figures. Each installment stands on its own, building a picture of how ambition, violence and betrayal shaped the ancient world's great power. Michael Sheen, Alex Ferns, John Shrapnel and Peter Firth appear among the figures brought to life in individual episodes. The look is grounded and handsome, with period costumes, marble courts and battlefield staging that suit a classroom-meets-costume-drama approach. The tone is sober and absorbing, with moments of cruelty and palace scheming that give the stories a pulse. Viewers who enjoy Rome, I, Claudius and other dramatized history will find the same appetite for ancient power politics here, delivered in a concise, accessible format.
