## Synopsis

Colosseum (2022) is a British documentary history series created by Jim Greayer for History. Across eight episodes of roughly forty-two minutes each, the series uses the great Roman amphitheater as its central lens on the empire's rise and fall, moving chronologically from the arena's opening day to its final games. Its engine is the everyday machinery of spectacle: the savage truth of the gladiator as a slave-warrior, the crowds, the fights, and the emperors who used the vast arena to project total power over Rome. Dramatized reconstructions sit alongside expert testimony, giving a personal, close-up view of lives that the record rarely preserves. The tone is vivid and unflinching, with the brutality of the games presented plainly rather than softened. Viewers who enjoy a one-season limited run of ancient history will find this a compact, immersive study of how a single structure can carry an entire civilization's ambitions. Fans of Rome, Spartacus and Ancient Egypt: Life and Death will find resonance in its blend of grounded history and dramatic reenactment.
