## Synopsis

The Devil's Whore (2008) is a British four-part historical miniseries created by Peter Flannery and Martine Brant for Channel 4, produced by Company Pictures. Spirited aristocrat Angelica Fanshawe (Andrea Riseborough) is drawn into the radical anti-monarchist movement as the English Civil War tears the nation apart. Her path crosses the rising army officer Oliver Cromwell (Dominic West), the Leveller agitator John Lilburne (Tom Goodman-Hill) and his wife Elizabeth Lilburne (Maxine Peake), while the hard-edged spy Edward Sexby (John Simm) and the king's court under Charles I (Peter Capaldi) pull the story in competing directions. Each episode of this 80-minute serial is built from a dense mix of pamphlet debates, secret meetings, battlefield dispatches and tense confrontations over what a government should become.
