## What critics say

Critics find Kleo a stylish German spy revenge thriller whose 1980s nostalgia and action set pieces outweigh its thin characters and weak storytelling.

## Synopsis

Kleo is a German television spy thriller set in the unsettled years after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Its protagonist is a former East German operative who has lost the state that trained and defined her. Her engine is a personal hunt: she sets out to discover who betrayed her and why, and she uses her lethal skills to pursue revenge through a shifting post reunification landscape of old networks, opportunistic criminals and new dangers. The story runs as a serialized arc rather than a case of the week, so each episode tightens the vendetta and deepens the sense that the past is never fully buried. Its tone is dark and propulsive, with violent confrontations, gritty crime textures and a melancholic undercurrent of disillusion and displacement. Lush eighties nostalgia colors the production design, giving the grimy present a glossy, retro sheen. Viewers drawn to Deutschland 83, Killing Eve and The Americans will find resonance in its espionage intrigue, its wounded female lead and its reckoning with a vanished regime and the people it left behind.
