## Synopsis

Victory at Sea (1952-1953) is an American documentary series created for NBC, a landmark wartime compilation production that helped establish the historical compilation documentary as a viable television form. Rather than following a single protagonist, it is built around a narrator who guides viewers through naval campaigns of World War II, stitched together from over 13,000 hours of footage gathered from American, British, German and Japanese navies. Each half-hour episode moves across ocean battles, convoys, and fleet movements, letting the images carry the weight of the conflict while the narration supplies context and momentum. The series is shaped as a single twenty-six-episode run of self-contained chapters that together form one continuing chronicle of the war at sea. Its score, composed by Richard Rodgers and Robert Russell Bennett, gives the broadcast a sweeping, symphonic register that feels grand, solemn and patriotic. Set in the Pacific and Atlantic theaters of the 1940s, the series offers a sober, dignified look at naval warfare that will appeal to viewers drawn to war documentaries, military history, and archival footage. Fans of The World at War, The Civil War and Why We Fight will find similar resonance in its archival grandeur and measured authority.
