## Synopsis

Journey to the West (1986-2000) is a Chinese national-television fantasy adventure series created by Jie Yang for CCTV-1. Adapted from the classical novel of the same title, it follows the Monkey King and a band of companions on a long pilgrimage to fetch sacred Buddhist scriptures. The Monkey King, voiced by Li Shihong and Yang Li, is a rebellious trickster whose mischief and pride constantly collide with the demands of the journey, while the monk pilgrim and his fellow travelers must endure one monstrous obstacle after another. Each episode is largely self-contained, a mythic encounter with demons, shapeshifters and celestial bureaucrats, so the story moves through a sequence of trials rather than one continuous plot. The series runs across two seasons and forty-one episodes, with the second season covering episodes of the original novel left unadapted in the first. Its tone is warm, playful and sincerely spiritual, mixing slapstick humor with moments of compassion and wonder. Set in a timeless mythic China of heavenly courts and haunted mountains, it has the feel of a beloved storybook epic. Fans of Monkey, Dragon Ball and Avatar: The Last Airbender will find resonance in its episodic quest structure, its trickster hero and its gentle family-friendly fantasy.
