## Synopsis

Ellery Queen (1975-1976) is an American television detective mystery series created by Richard Levinson and William Link for NBC. Jim Hutton plays Ellery Queen, a mystery writer who shadows the police work of his father, Inspector Richard Queen, played by David Wayne, while Tom Reese plays the dogged Sgt. Velie. Each hour-long episode is a self-contained murder investigation set in post World War II New York City, where the crime writer's sharp eye for clues drives the case forward and the family and police dynamic supplies the warmth. The engine is the puzzle itself: suspects, alibis and red herrings pile up until the solution lands. Across a single season of twenty-two episodes, the show stays a case-of-the-week procedural rather than a continuing story. The title character regularly breaks the fourth wall to invite viewers to test their own deductions before the reveal. The tone is cheerful and playful, with a light touch on the crime and a gentle affection for mid-century Manhattan. Fans of Columbo and Murder, She Wrote will find resonance in its whodunit structure and its mix of brainy detection and domestic comfort.
