## Synopsis

Boy Swallows Universe (2024) is an Australian coming of age crime drama miniseries created by John Collee for Netflix, adapted from the acclaimed novel of the same name. Set in 1980s Brisbane suburbs, the story follows a young boy named Eli Bell (Felix Cameron) as he grows up amid the harsh realities of working class life and the looming criminal dangers that threaten his family. Frances Bell (Phoebe Tonkin) and Gus Bell (Lee Tiger Halley) anchor the household, while Eloise Rothfield's Shelly Huffman and Adam Briggs's Alex Bermuda widen its orbit into the shadowy world beyond the front gate. The engine of the series is a child's attempt to make sense of adult violence and secrets, as ordinary suburban routines keep colliding with the underworld. Told across seven episodes of roughly fifty-six minutes each, it is a single continuing story rather than a case of the week, and it unfolds with a melancholic, lyrical register that balances dread and tenderness. Its moods recall the nostalgic pull of The Wonder Years and the criminal undertow of Animal Kingdom, and fans of those shows will find resonance in its blend of childhood wonder and menace. Themes of family loyalty, innocence under pressure and the cost of growing up surface throughout, giving this limited series a textured, emotionally weighted watch.
