## Synopsis

The Watcher (2022) is an American true crime inspired drama series created by Ian Brennan and Ryan Murphy for Netflix. Naomi Watts plays Nora Brannock, a mother whose family moves into a suburban dream home only to receive ominous letters and face sinister threats from the people around them. Bobby Cannavale plays her husband Dean, and Margo Martindale, Jennifer Coolidge and Mia Farrow appear among the eccentric neighbors whose behavior grows increasingly strange. The engine of the series is the slow erosion of a family's sense of safety as the threats multiply and the anonymous letter writer refuses to reveal themselves. Told across seven episodes of roughly forty-eight minutes each, it is a single continuing story rather than a case of the week, building tension through small domestic details, neighborhood gossip and mounting paranoia. Set in a quiet American suburb in the present day, the series draws on a real magazine article about a family's experience, and its mood is eerie, claustrophobic and uneasy. Fans of Dead Set, The Staircase and Big Little Lies will find resonance in its blend of domestic unease and true crime fascination, though the show leaves its central mystery unresolved.
