## Synopsis

Berserk: The Golden Age Arc – Memorial Edition (2022) is a Japanese animated dark fantasy series produced by STUDIO4℃ and broadcast on TOKYO MX and BS11. Its protagonist is the lone swordsman Guts, voiced by Hiroaki Iwanaga, who is defeated in a duel by the ambitious mercenary leader Griffith, voiced by Takahiro Sakurai, and is forced to fight in his Band of the Hawk. Casca, voiced by Toa Yukinari, stands among his new comrades as the bond between Guts and Griffith grows. The engine of the story is Guts's wary climb from distrustful outsider to trusted soldier, as the band rises in rank toward a full-fledged army through hard-fought battles and brutal campaigns. Told across a single thirteen-episode season of roughly 25 minutes each, the series is a seinen anime with a bleak, foreboding register, where camaraderie and ambition are constantly shadowed by the sense of a dreadful fate ahead. Its medieval-style world is rendered with heavy gore and visceral combat, and its mood is grim, mournful and intense. Fans of Vinland Saga and Attack on Titan will find resonance in its brutal battles, morally tangled warriors and fatalistic tone, and viewers of the original Berserk manga adaptations will recognise its dark fantasy DNA.
