## Synopsis

1703 (2022) is a Russian dark comedy crime series created for Okko, a single-season run of eight 48-minute episodes. Vadik Radchenko (Kuzma Saprykin), a young opera singer from Moscow, is transferred to St Petersburg to be near his fiancee and finds himself saddled with a mentor, Captain Gosha Kolpakov (Gosha Kutsenko), a psychotic, suicidal and misanthropic officer living through the darkest stretch of his life. The engine of the show is an odd-couple partnership: the two men travel the city around Bulanov and work a strange case in which the corpses of young girls keep disappearing from morgues. Each episode moves through the investigation at a conversational pace, with the humor rising out of the mismatch between Vadik's gentle idealism and Kolpakov's bleak indifference. Supporting players including Sofia Lebedeva as Masha and Varvara Feofanova as Aurora fill out the city's social circle. The tone is caustic, unsettling and melancholic, carried by a Petersburg atmosphere of damp streets and grey institutions. Fans of True Detective, Twin Peaks and Psych will find resonance in its blend of crime mystery, black humor and damaged protagonists.
