## Synopsis

American Horror Story (2011-present) is a United States television horror anthology series created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk for FX. Each season rebuilds a new story around a different haunted place and a largely rotating cast, so a viewer might follow a family moving into a house with a murderous past, a staff and patients in an asylum, a witch coven at a New Orleans school, a traveling freak show, or a summer camp under threat. Sarah Paulson and Kathy Bates recur across many seasons, playing different characters in each one, while Angela Bassett appears as the voodoo figure Marie Laveau. The engine is less a single plot than a pressure cooker: characters trapped in a setting that feeds on their guilt, fear, and ambition, with each season built from a new premise and a new set of frights. The show runs for thirteen seasons and is closer to a set of self-contained chapters than one continuing story. The tone is lurid, campy, and theatrical, mixing melodrama with gore and social satire. Fans of Fargo, The Haunting of Hill House and Black Mirror will find resonance in its rotating structure and its unsettling dread.
