## Synopsis

Joan (2024) is a British limited series created by Anna Symon for ITV1, adapted from a novel. Sophie Turner plays Joan Hannington, a penniless mother whose single impulsive decision at the jewellery shop where she works throws her into a world she never expected. Frank Dillane co-stars as Boisie Hannington, and the wider cast includes Dorothy Atkinson, Laura Aikman and Caroline Faber as women whose lives brush against hers. The engine of the story is Joan's scramble to keep her family afloat while each lie and small theft demands another, so every episode tightens the knot around her. Told across six roughly forty-six minute episodes, it is one continuing story rather than a case of the week. Its contemporary English settings are grounded and domestic, with shops, kitchens and tense street-level encounters. The mood is tense and morally uneasy, carrying a sympathy for the heroine that sits alongside real danger. Fans of Breaking Bad and Liar, who enjoy an ordinary person sliding into crime, will find resonance here.
