## Synopsis

Spy/Master (2023) is a Romanian spy thriller series created by Kirsten Peters and Adina Sădeanu for HBO Max, a single-season limited run of six hour-long episodes. Victor Godeanu (Alec Secăreanu), the right-hand man and closest advisor to dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu, is also a secret KGB agent, and he must escape Romania before his double life is exposed. Helped by an undercover Stasi agent and an ambitious CIA officer, Ingrid Von Weizendorff (Svenja Jung) and Frank Jackson (Parker Sawyers), he must elude the KGB and his own country's security services. Every episode turns on a tightening chain of contacts, safehouses, and forged loyalties, with the constant knowledge that his defection places his family back home in mortal danger. The series builds its tension from surveillance, betrayal, and the calculated risk of trusting the wrong handler. Set during the height of the Cold War in communist Romania, its atmosphere is claustrophobic and paranoid, carrying the moral weight of a man who helped build the machine he is now desperate to escape. Fans of The Americans, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, and The Lives of Others will find resonance in its espionage intrigue and eastern bloc dread.
