## Synopsis

Empire Falls (2005) is an American prestige drama miniseries created as an HBO Films production, adapted from Richard Russo's novel. Set in a declining New England mill town on the Knox River, the story follows Miles Roby (Ed Harris), a restaurant manager who is stuck running the diner he cannot escape, while his mother Francine Whiting (Joanne Woodward) and the town's powerful owner Charlie Mayne (Philip Seymour Hoffman) pull him into old debts and class grudges. Janine Roby (Helen Hunt), Max Roby (Paul Newman) and Grace Roby (Robin Wright) add layers of family history and marital strain. Across two long episodes, the drama is built from small daily frictions, rivalries and quiet compromises in a town whose vacant mills stand as reminders of what was lost. The tone blends humorous and poignant registers, with wry dialogue sitting beside melancholy about aging, regret and the ghosts of the past. Its atmosphere is wistful and grounded, with a weathered river landscape and intimate interiors. Fans of Olive Kitteridge and Big Little Lies will find resonance in its ensemble of flawed characters and its portrait of a community defined by class. Viewers looking for a character-driven limited series about ordinary lives will feel at home here.
