## Synopsis

The Interpreter of Silence (2023) is a German historical drama miniseries created by Annette Hess for Disney+. Eva Bruhns (Katharina Stark) is about to marry when she accepts work interpreting at a trial of SS officers, a decision her parents Edith (Anke Engelke) and Ludwig Bruhns (Hans-Jochen Wagner) and her fiancé try to talk her out of. Across five episodes of roughly fifty-seven minutes each, the engine of the story is Eva's struggle to render courtroom testimony faithfully while the proceedings draw her toward a personal connection she never expected. Each episode is built around the trial itself: witness statements, cross examinations, and the evasions of defendants such as Wilhelm Boger (Heiner Lauterbach) who insist on their innocence. The result is a limited series with a measured, contemplative pace, set in postwar Germany, where the family's silences become as important as the words spoken in court. The tone is sober, tense, and emotionally heavy, with a focus on denial, complicity, and inherited guilt. Viewers who enjoyed the courtroom reckoning of Judgment at Nuremberg, the German family perspective of Generation War, or the reflective weight of Holocaust will find resonance here. It is a single-season, five-episode series aired on Disney+ with a German-language cast.
