## Synopsis

Exterior Night (2022) is an Italian and French co-produced political miniseries created by Marco Bellocchio, Giovanni Bianconi, Nicola Lusuardi and Stefano Bises for Rai 1 and ARTE. Across six episodes of roughly fifty-seven minutes, it dramatizes the 1978 kidnapping of Christian Democrat president Aldo Moro, played by Fabrizio Gifuni, by the extreme left-wing Red Brigades. The engine is a race against time: the captors stage a mock people's trial and pass judgment on their prisoner, while the ruling establishment and Pope Paul VI, played by Toni Servillo, pull hidden strings to save him. Margherita Buy plays Eleonora Chiavarelli, and Fausto Russo Alesi appears as Francesco Cossiga, both anchoring the political maneuvering. Each episode builds from tense negotiations and interrogations to a grim moral reckoning, with the dread of a hostage's fate and the cold calculus of power shaping every scene. Set in 1970s Rome, the miniseries carries the weight of real Italian history, its tone sober, claustrophobic and morally uneasy. Fans of Il Divo and The Young Pope will find resonance in its blend of political intrigue, religious authority and historical gravity, and the story stays grounded in documented events rather than melodrama.
