## Synopsis

Jentry Chau vs the Underworld (2024) is a US animated supernatural comedy created by Echo Wu for Netflix. Jentry Chau, voiced by Ali Wong, is a not-so-average teen in a small Texas town who begins to rediscover the fiery powers she has long kept suppressed as her sixteenth birthday approaches. Her grandmother Gugu, voiced by Lori Tan Chinn, and the sardonic Ed, voiced by Bowen Yang, are among the principal voices around her, and the story pushes her to confront her demons, quite literally. The engine is simple and propulsive: Jentry wants to keep her life ordinary, while the underworld keeps pulling her toward a reckoning with what she has been hiding. Across a single thirteen-episode season, each half-hour episode mixes kinetic animated action with teen high school comedy and family banter. Produced with Titmouse, the series has a brash, irreverent, warm register, carrying a Chinese American family sensibility into a supernatural horror-tinged world. Fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Hilda and Kid Cosmic will find familiar pleasures in its mix of teen angst, monster fights and affectionate humor. Its single completed season makes it a compact, easy watch that rewards viewers who enjoy playful animated genre television with heart.
