## Synopsis

Shardlake is a British historical mystery series created by Stephen Butchard and C. J. Sansom for Disney+, adapted from Sansom's novel and set in 1536 England during the Tudor upheaval. Arthur Hughes plays Matthew Shardlake, a lawyer sent by Thomas Cromwell to investigate a suspicious death at the remote monastery of Scarnsea. Anthony Boyle plays his assistant Jack Barak, a sharp and restless companion, while Babou Ceesay plays Abbot Fabian, whose sober authority hides much. Across a single four-episode season, Shardlake must sift through monks' alibis, secrets and lies, with each episode peeling back another layer of deception as it becomes clear the murder is not the first. The engine is a investigation where every answer breeds a new danger, and the stakes shift from a missing truth to his own integrity and life. The tone is brooding, claustrophobic and tense, built on cold stone corridors, candlelit confessions and the paranoia of a court where power is never far away. Fans of Wolf Hall, The Name of the Rose and Cadfael will find resonance in its blend of period atmosphere and methodical detection. The series was canceled after its one season, leaving its central mystery unresolved.
