## What critics say

Viewers praise Boots as a warm, character-driven coming-of-age military comedy-drama with a loyal brotherhood at its heart, though its single season is a modest, mostly audience-driven success.

## Synopsis

Boots (2025) is an American coming of age military drama comedy created by Andy Parker for Netflix. Set in 1990, it follows Cameron Cope (Miles Heizer), a bullied teen who impulsively enlists in the U.S. Marine Corps alongside his straight best friend. Drill sergeant Liam Robert Sullivan (Max Parker) runs the recruits through grueling training, while Cope's mother Barbara (Vera Farmiga) and fellow recruits such as Ray McCaffey (Liam Oh) and Marcus McKinnon (Cedrick Cooper) shape his path. Cameron wants to belong and to be seen for who he is, but the rigid expectations of boot camp and the closet stand in his way. Each episode is built from barracks tensions, punishing drills, and small human moments that slowly turn a motley squad into a family. The eight-episode single season carries a warm, earnest register with bursts of wry humor, and its tone stays sincere about fear, loyalty, and self-acceptance. Its atmosphere is grounded and nostalgic, closer to a character drama than a war story. Fans of Full Metal Jacket, The Long Walk and Heartstopper will find resonance in its mix of military discipline, queer coming of age and tender friendship. The series was canceled after its single season, leaving its story unfinished.
