## Synopsis

Cigarette Girl (2023) is an Indonesian romance and period drama series created by Shanty Harmayn, Tanya Yuson, Kamila Andini and Ifa Isfansyah for Netflix. Dian Sastrowardoyo plays Dasiyah, a gifted artisan who refuses to let tradition define her, opposite Ario Bayu as Soeraja, a powerful figure in the clove cigarette trade, while Arya Saloka plays Lebas in the shadow of a romance that cannot easily be spoken. Across five hour-long episodes, the story moves through the rivalries, family obligations and shifting loyalties of a male-run industry, following how Dasiyah pursues her craft and her own path while old debts and buried longing keep pulling the characters back toward one another. The engine is simple and personal: a woman who wants recognition and love on her own terms, and the social expectations that stand between her and both. Set in 1960s Indonesia, the series unfolds in a world of clove-scented workshops, humid streets and family compounds, rendered with a lush, elegiac atmosphere. Its tone is wistful and romantic, with melancholic undercurrents and a sense of history pressing on private lives. Viewers who enjoy Memories of a Geisha, Mad Men and Bridgerton will find resonance in its period detail, its tangled romance and its portrait of women negotiating power in a tradition-bound world.
