## Synopsis

Mononoke (2007) is a Japanese seinen anime series produced by Toei Animation for Fuji TV. Its mysterious, deadly exorcist, the Medicine Seller, voiced by Takahiro Sakurai, travels through feudal Japan hunting malevolent spirits called mononoke. Supporting voice cast includes Daisuke Namikawa as Sougen and Daisuke Sakaguchi as Hyoue Sasaki. The engine of each self-contained twelve-episode arc is a ritual: before he can wield the Exorcism Sword, he must investigate and learn the spirit's Form, Truth, and Reason, a process of psychological analysis and careful detective work that is dangerous in itself because he must confront the creature first. Each episode is a case-of-the-week story built around a different haunting rooted in human guilt and hidden motives. The stylized Edo-period visuals, drawn from woodblock prints, give the show a painterly, unsettling register. The tone is eerie, austere, and dread-filled, with horror that is psychological as well as visceral. Fans of Ghost Hunt, Ghost Stories and Hellsing will find resonance in its blend of folklore horror and investigative mystery. The series is a single season of twelve episodes.
