## Synopsis

The Billionaire, the Butler, and the Boyfriend (2023) is a French true crime docuseries released on Netflix. Told in three episodes of roughly forty-nine minutes each, it unpacks how a bitter conflict between the world's wealthiest woman, Liliane Bettencourt, and her daughter Françoise Bettencourt Meyers spiraled into a national political scandal. The series builds its account from archive footage, with the principal figures appearing in their own recorded words, including former president Nicolas Sarkozy, and with the household entourage of the fortune, including the personal aide François-Marie Banier, woven through the affair. Rather than dramatizing the events, it lays out the sequence of accusations, legal skirmishes and media frenzy that turned a private quarrel over money and influence into public spectacle. The atmosphere is brisk and sharp-edged, a sensational account of privilege, loyalty and betrayal in high society. Viewers who enjoy true crime documentaries such as Tiger King, Dirty John and The Staircase will find a similar appetite for real-life family drama and the unravelling of a scandal. It is a compact, tightly focused limited docuseries that rewards attention to its web of characters and the intrigue surrounding a vast fortune.
