## Synopsis

Mr Bates vs The Post Office (2024) is a British national-television true story drama miniseries created by James Strong for ITV1. Across four episodes of roughly 47 minutes each, Toby Jones plays Alan Bates, a sub-postmaster who becomes the reluctant figurehead for hundreds of postmasters and postmistresses wrongly accused of theft, fraud and false accounting. Julie Hesmondhalgh plays Suzanne Sercombe, Monica Dolan plays Jo Hamilton, and Lia Williams plays Paula Vennells, with Will Mellor and Amy Nuttall as Lee and Lisa Castleton. The engine of the story is a stubborn fight against an institution that trusts a defective IT system over the testimony of the people running its branches. Each episode follows the grinding practical toll of the accusations, from shortfalls appearing in ledgers to kitchen table meetings, legal setbacks and mounting debts. The tone is indignant and sorrowful, with a steady, grounded realism that never tips into melodrama. Set in 2000s Britain across small towns and shop counters, it is a limited series for viewers who appreciate true story legal dramas in the vein of A Very English Scandal and Mrs America, and anyone who loved Erin Brockovich's David-versus-corporation storytelling.
