## Synopsis

The Legend of Zorro (1996-1997) is a Japanese animated action adventure series created for NHK BS1, produced by Ashi Productions, TOHO and Mondo TV, and built as a single 52-episode season. Diego Vega (voiced by Toshihiko Seki), a young nobleman back from study abroad, finds his Spanish colonial homeland ruled by an army dictatorship and dons a black mask as the swordsman Zorro. His engine is simple and charming: he wants to shield the weak and oppressed from the garrison, but he also wants to win the heart of Lolita Prideaux (Maria Kawamura), who keeps favoring other, more noble suitors. Episodes are built from street rescues, duels, gunfights and cunning escapes staged against the soldiers of Commandant Raymond (Jurota Kosugi) and his lieutenants. Lively and romantic, it is a shonen-style anime with a heroic, comic register, a warm and earnest tone, and a sense of old-fashioned swashbuckling. Fans of Zorro (1957), Batman: The Animated Series and Lupin the Third will find resonance in its masked-hero charm and playful romance.
