## Synopsis

The Art of Joy (2024- ) is an Italian historical drama miniseries created by Valeria Golino, Valia Santella, Francesca Marciano, Luca Infascelli and Stefano Sardo for Sky Atlantic. Tecla Insolia plays Modesta, a poor girl from rural Sicily born in 1900 who refuses the narrow future her family and village have mapped for her. After a tragic separation she is taken into a monastery, where Mother Superior Leonora (Jasmine Trinca) becomes both mentor and jailer, and later she enters the household of Princess Gaia Brandiforti (Valeria Bruni Tedeschi), where she makes herself indispensable. The engine of the story is Modesta's stubborn, relentless effort to climb out of servitude and claim her own body and desires, while the villa's rituals, the church's rules and the rigid class hierarchy push back at every step. Told across six hour-long episodes, it is a single continuing arc rather than a case-of-the-week format. Set in early twentieth century Sicily, it moves with a sensual, melancholic register, dwelling on the textures of rural hardship and aristocratic excess. Its emotional core is a female coming of age shaped by sexual awakening and the right to happiness. Fans of The Leopard, Bridgerton and The Gilded Age will find resonance in its lavish period atmosphere and its focus on a woman's emancipation.
